The Matrix System is an economical and environmentally sound technology for the treatment of infectious wastes, including sharps. The Matrix Infectious Waste Treatment System is owned by Matrix Technology Pty.Ltd. of Cairns, Queensland, Australia where it was invented and developed with the aid of an Australian Government grant. It is patented in Australia, the United States of America and a variety of other countries. It is accepted in the USA. The Matrix System provides an extremely high inactivation rate of indicator organisms after a residence time of only about 4 to 5 minutes. The Matrix System is one of four technologies used in Australia as set out in the Australian Industry Code of Practice for the Management of Clinical and Related Wastes. That Code has been described by world experts as world's best practice.
This method results in minimum environmental impact as there are no harmful gas emission to the atmosphere, or liquids to the sewer. To the best of the company's knowledge it is the only patented system for medical and bio infectious waste treatment which recovers CO2 and produces O2 in the process.
