The system was developed when the incinerator at the Cairns Base Hospital needed to be replaced with a more environmentally friendly technology. With the assistance of a grant from the Australian Government the technology was developed, proved, and regulatory approval given. Identifying which were the suitable alkaline earths, and the correct proportions to use, required considerable research and experimentation. The scientists involved were an environmental biologist and a consulting chemist.
The technology was licensed to Clinical Waste Australia Pty.Ltd., then the largest hospital waste treatment company in New South Wales, after that company had engaged the services of New York consultants to identify the most suitable technology for its purposes.
