Efficacy Testing

Testing of the efficacy of the Matrix System was carried out by Ed Stuttard B.Sc. MASM MAIFST IAFP , of EML Consulting Services Qld Pty Ltd . EML was established in 1968 in Melbourne, Australia and is accredited with the National Association of Testing Laboratories (NATA). It established laboratories in Sydney in 1987 and in Brisbane in 1996.

On site testing and sampling was performed by Mr. Stuttard and all testing was carried out under his direct supervision at the NATA registered testing facility of EML Consulting Services Queensland Pty.Ltd. The report states-"Specific guidelines for disinfecting clinical waste in New South Wales were not specifically available. Consultation with the USEPA suggested that guidelines used by the Californian Department of Health Services (CDHS) for assessing alternative technologies were the most stringent and were based on a report done by EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) in 1998 known as STAATT 2 for short. [ Technical Assistance Manual: State Regulatory Oversight of Medical Waste Treatment Technologies: A Report of the State and Territorial Association on Alternative Treatment Technologies (STAATT), EPRI,Palo Alto, CA: 1998. TR-112222.] It was decided to use the CDHS guidelines.."

"The STAATT 2 guidelines stipulate a 6 Log 10 reduction in the concentration of a Mycobacterium sp., M. bovis BCG, M. phlei, or other species of mycobacteria, and a 4 Log 10 reduction in the level of Bacillus spores.

The report concluded:
"Significant levels of Microbial reduction were observed at the beginning of the Matrix processing system, with further reductions noted in the treated waste over 48 hour period.

It was demonstrated that vegetative bacterial cells were reduced by 8-Log 10 units within five minutes of processing whereas mesophilic bacterial spores were reduced by 6-Log 10 units within a similar timeframe."

Continuing testing required by regulators has not shown any variation.
